Family Ties Winter 2011

Family Ties- the Newsletter of Family of Woodstock, Inc

From Michael's Pen

Dear Friends,

It’s a time of mixed emotions. Seeing the pain that so many of our neighbors are suffering from the recent floods and the state of the economy, it is easy to become downhearted. But crisis situations bring out the best in us. And, as you will see from this newsletter, so many people stepped up in so many ways to respond that we have to be proud of who we are and where we live.

In this edition, we highlight the remarkable gifts of Rick Soshensky, a music therapist who is giving his time to improve the lives of those living in shelters and on the edge. His sessions have literally brought people out of their depression and reminded them of the joy that making and sharing music brings.

The efforts of the therapists participating in Health Care as a Human Right not only addressed the physical stress that the flood and recovery efforts placed on bodies, but gave real relief and hope to those who lost most of all of their worldly possessions. It is always remarkable for me to see the resilience and commitment of our local farmers. They are truly the salt of the earth.

Most of you should have by now received our annual solicitation. We have tough decisions ahead. I cannot accept that we will be forced to tear apart the safety net that we have built, especially at a time of such need. FAMILY has succeeded in demonstrating how much neighbors can support each other and make a difference. Everyone acknowledges that these programs significantly lower the cost of taking care of those most at risk. It is sad to see their existence in jeopardy. Your year-end tax-deductible contribution to Family of Woodstock can make a real difference.

I wish you and your families a healthy and joyous holiday season and a good winter.

Best Regards,
Michael
